Frequently asked questions

How can an interior designer help me?

Employing a good interior designer can save you time and money, as well as providing you with inspiration and expertise along the way. We can help you incorporate your own personal style into your home, using your own passions to develop an incredible interior that you will love

Over time we have built up an extensive supplier base, meaning we can source many unique items for your home that may not be available locally.
You don’t need to be a city-dweller to enjoy an interior design service either. We have helped several rural clients create beautiful homes when they have previously struggled due to their location and time constraints. Although based in Edinburgh, we frequently commit to projects around the country and often visit clients in London and further a field. We are happy to visit you or work remotely from photographs and plans sent by you.

How long will it take?

The time taken will depend on the size of the project and what you want to achieve.

An ‘in-house’ standard design and furniture package can be implemented in 4-6 weeks, whereas a personal design will take a little longer. The timescales will be discussed at the first meeting and we will be as accommodating as possible in achieving your aims.

Can anyone call themselves an interior designer?

In short yes

So it is very important to ensure that your designer has professional qualifications. Be sure to check that they have professional indemnity insurance, have clear terms and conditions and can show you a portfolio of past projects.

Do I have to use a designers service for everything?

No, we are happy to work to the level of involvement that suits you.

Some clients require specific help with colour schemes, room layout or sourcing interesting materials and furniture, while others prefer to hand over the entire project. We are happy to work to the level of involvement that suits you.

Perhaps you love colour but are nervous about how to use it. We recently had a client who handed over her house keys as she was leaving on holiday sayingI need to paint my hall but I can only think of magnolia – do it next week and you can choose any colour you like, I want a surprise when I get home. She returned from holiday and loved it. (It’s a soft grey/blue by the way. We looked at the clothes she wore, her skin tone, the light and the other colours in the house to make the choice.)

How much will it cost?

Not as much as you would have expected

Our hourly rate starts at £55 for one-to-one interiors advice and we have various packages covering everything from single rooms to whole properties.

Fees may be calculated on an hourly basis or as a fixed project fee depending on what is right for you. We offer a discount to landlords or developers looking for help with a number of properties. There are no hidden charges and when sourcing furnishings, we charge the recommended retail price and do not mark up above that. Because we are good at what we do, we can often make your budget stretch further.

How do we get started?

Give us a call or drop us an email.

For bespoke design we will carry out a free initial consultation to learn what the project will entail and what your requirements are. During this time we will discuss colour schemes, design options, and other relevant information, and explain our terms and conditions of contract. From this, we will produce a design brief, following this you will have as much time as you need to decide if you would like us to proceed.
Alternatively if you just want some simple help we can organise a fixed price consultation.

Do you work with any particular style?

Yes and No.

We are happy to work with any style to help each client achieve the look they would like. Alternatively we have a designer ‘in house’ look which can be implemented quickly and with little design cost.

Interior designers – aren’t they very pretentious and just for the super rich?

Absolutely not!

At Robertson Lindsay we are passionate about being approachable, good quality and good value.

Can I use my own tradespeople?

Of course.

We would always recommend using well respected tradespeople, if you prefer to either use your own contacts, or do DIY then that is absolutely fine.
