Move over magnolia, pattern is back

We are seeing a lot of fabrics and wallpapers with bold prints and interesting detail being launched by the design houses. Retro botanical prints from the 1950’s and 60’s are very popular right now. We spotted this Nisha Crossland wallpaper in Sophie Dahl’s kitchen, its a lovely design that has been popular for a sometime now but it is bang on trend for 2013.

Calligraphy and hand drawing is having a moment

With the opportunity to have fabrics designed just for you, we are excited to see art move into fabric and wallpaper designs. Interior design clients can select their own version of prints and patterns that are personal to them and there is no chance of seeing them anywhere else! We have been working with the very talented artist Joanna Srokol who produced this beautiful calligraphy for us.

Go big on grouping mirrors

Whilst using mirrors as art has been around for a while we saw several new launches at a London design show. It gives a really feminine look that works well in a bedroom.

Brass….tastic

We are so used to seeing brass fittings in the Georgian Edinburgh homes we work in that we have became a little bit blasé about it. Not any more, for 2013 it is time for a revival – Brass is a warm metallic and co-ordinates beautifully with natural fabrics such as leather, wools and tartan. If you are lucky enough to have original brass in your home then try mixing it in with some more modern brass shapes to bring your home up to date.

 Nature – trees are not just for Christmas

As well as the retro-botanical trend in pattern we are seeing a growth in the use of natural materials in interiors. Stone, marble and grasses are being used more in construction and decoration and its a trend we expect to continue. Right on our doorstep is the wonderful British wool industry. We plan to use a lot more wools this year – from fleece to fashion, its biodegradable, sustainable, durable and looks great in the 2013 home.

Cut glass cool

Its British, its traditional and its very cool right now – cut glass has moved from the drinks cabinet into interiors. We spotted East London designer Lee Broom’s beautiful lead crystal bulbs on our last trip south, each bulb is individually hand blown and then cut with a classic crystal pattern. Indulge your inner magpie with the crystal trend and use it in different ways – we loved these crystal handle tie backs for curtains too!

Its great that 2012 is all about bigging up Britain but sometimes a little Parisian chic just adds a special something!

RL ran around Paris for 4 days looking for fabrics and furniture. Lots of exciting new finds – here are some of the beauties hunted down in the 18th arrondissement flea market.

Happy days here at team RL as we prepare for a trip to visit our suppliers in Paris. One of our favourite accessory suppliers is based there - and we cant wait to see their latest collection of ginger jars. We’re all for grouping them together to make a big impact (image from habituallychic)

Be still our beating style hearts……

The very chic Bennison calendar landed on the RL desk this week and we wanted to
share some of our favourites. They have created fairy tale images with their
new collection of fabrics; traditional designs which we think look bang up to
date.

Bennison is a British company specialising in hand-printed fabrics
based on the designs of original 18th and 19th century English and French
textiles.

The designs are printed in England on linens and silks. They can
make custom colours to fit in with your room scheme and have a clever fading
technique to age fabric to fit into older properties.

We have declared today ‘Wallpaper Wednesday’ and we’re feeling classical at RL! We’ve just sourced some stunning gold damask wallpaper for a client’s country house bathroom so we thought we’d share a bit more of this design classic.

Damask fabrics took their name from the ancient city of Damascus in Syria, which by the 12th century had become famous for its trade in lavish and expensive silks.

Zoffany are the modern day king of damasks and they’ve recently re-launched their range after a trawl back through the archives from the 16^thcentury.

The pomegranate wallpaper (pictured above) dates from the mid 18th century. A later version of this design from the 19th century was used in the library at Clivedon, home to Lord Astor (infamous for where the Profumo Affair was conducted). if walls could talk…..

First up its wallpapers for boys rooms, these fun designs were created by mum Victoria after she couldn’t find anything she liked for her two boys’ rooms. We think she’s come up with something classic, but edgy with definite rascal appeal!

The brilliantly named ‘D’ya-think-e-saurus’ shows a small boy playing with dinosaurs and it comes in four different color palates.

And to really max the fun, the boys can really get into the trouble with matching soft furnishing.

Victoria’s “Hand Made’ range kept us entertained as we practiced our own hand shadow shapes. We loved the simplicity of this idea, combined with the contemporary range of shades, and we think its a great the idea to unleash little people’s imaginations in their own bedrooms with wallpaper.
